STATEMENT BY NSW LABOR ON JOHN BARILARO’S CALL TO BUY BACK LIDDELL POWER STATION

Media Statement

19 April 2018

This is beyond ridiculous. A few years ago the Liberals and Nationals quite literally gave Liddell away for nothing and with it the right to dictate what AGL does with it.

Now AGL wants to invest in renewable energy it seems the state government want to confiscate the asset like some Communist dictatorship. Barilaro is bringing Bolshevism to NSW.

If the NSW Government thinks AGL has a conflict of interest then why did it give the power station to AGL, ignoring the advice of the competition watchdog?

The only legitimate interest government has is to ensure there is a sufficient supply of affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity to the community. Keeping Liddell operating in its current form fails on all counts.

Instead of engaging in crony capitalism, the NSW Government should be encouraging AGL to invest in new electricity generation in the Hunter Valley. This will create jobs and be good for the local economy.
